The fib of Witness began in the early 70s with the involvement of tierce writers, Pamela and Earl Wallace and William Kelley. Novelist Pamela Wallace had an idea for a novel about an Amish woman who witnesses a shoot in LA. Screenwriter Earl Wallace, who had written for the TV series How the West was produce, liked the idea and began to draft a script. He recal direct an episode of the series that had an Amish story and he got in opposition with the writer. Kelley had observed and admired the pacifist Amish intimacy during his sequence as a seminarian in Lancaster County. In 1972, he wrote an episode for Gunsmoke called The Pig humankind, in which quartette brothers assault a girl from an Amish-like community called the Simonites. Richter, a gunslinger, defends the girl, kills bingle of the brothers and yields wounded. He is then taken into the community to recover, where he fall in love. The story was then reworked into the series How the West was win and played in 1977. CASTING Earl and Kelley completed the screenplay, Witness. Then Hollywood manufacturing business Edward Feldman brought it to the attention of action hired gun, Harrison Ford. His interest in the script encouraged Paramount Studios to spoil it. Australian movie maker Peter Weir was appointed to direct what would become his first Hollywood picture.

CHANGING THE SCRIPT Before production commenced, the screenplay underwent several changes.
